Pasquale DiSalvo, DiSalvo’s Trattoria’s owner’s name is derived from this holiday so Easter Sunday at DiSalvo’s Trattoria is an extra special occasion.

Easter brings to a close the three most important days of the Catholic year — days of prayer and fasting, which were also marked by the marvelous smells of the preparations for Easter dinner. In Roman homes pizza ricresciuta would glow on the dining room table, awaiting the blessing of the priest, but nobody was allowed to taste. Small wonder children greeted Easter morning with joy!

While you probably won’t see the Easter bunny if you’re in Italy for Easter, you will find some interesting Italian Easter celebrations. Like all holidays in Italy, Easter, Pasqua in Italian, has its share of rituals and traditions. The Monday following Easter, la Pasquetta is also a holiday throughout Italy. While the days before Easter in Italy include solemn processions and masses, Easter is a joyous celebration.
Since Easter is the end of the Lent season, food plays a big part in the celebrations. Traditional Easter foods include lamb or goat, artichokes, and special Easter breads that vary from region to region. Pannetone and Colomba (dove shaped) breads are often given as gifts as are hollow chocolate eggs that usually come with a surprise inside.
On Easter Monday, some cities hold dances, free concerts, or unusual games often involving eggs. In the Umbrian hill town of Panicale, cheese is the star. Ruzzolone is played by rolling huge wheels of cheese, weighing about 4 kilos, around the village walls. The object is to get your cheese around the course using the fewest number of strokes. Following the cheese contest, there is a band in thepiazza and of course, wine.

Italian lovers are famous throughout history. So with all this history of love and romance, spring lust and eros, debauchery and revelry, it would only seem natural that Italy, the purported land of romance, would celebrate Valentine’s Day with great passion and joy.

In Italy il giorno della festa degli innamoratiis exclusively a celebration for couples or lovers. However, for those who are in love Valentine’s Day in Italy is an important one to show their beloved how much they care. In the evening couples usually go to dinner at apizzeria or ristorante. Depending on the age of the pair, gifts could include red roses or perfume, diamonds, or the famous Baci Perugina. These small, chocolate-covered hazelnuts contain a small slip of paper with a romantic poetic quote in four languages.
